The WiGe Faculty’s PhD programme
The doctoral programme at the Faculty of Management, Economics and Society combines academic research with issues relevant to practice. The aim of the programme is to support doctoral candidates in developing independent, high-quality research projects, whilst at the same time promoting the transfer of academic findings to the worlds of business, society and politics.
In terms of content, the doctoral programme combines methodological training, theory-based research, interdisciplinary exchange and individual areas of specialisation. The programme is complemented by research colloquia, participation in conferences and exchanges with researchers both within and outside UW/H.
What makes our PhD programme special
1. High flexibility
The PhD programme comprises only a few compulsory components and allows students to tailor their course of study to their individual needs. It also allows for the recognition of external learning opportunities and conference attendance. The programme can also be completed entirely in English.
2. Structured support and personalised guidance
The PhD programme combines a clearly structured qualification framework with personalised, research-oriented supervision. Methodological training opportunities, regular feedback and targeted support measures help PhD candidates to successfully carry out their research projects. The continuous development of the programme ensures high quality standards and provides long-term support for the academic and professional development of PhD candidates.
3. Academic networking
The PhD programme promotes academic networking amongst PhD students through collaborations with national and international research partners, as well as by incorporating external research and professional development opportunities. Regular research colloquia, workshops, conferences and joint research projects facilitate in-depth exchange with academics both within and outside the faculty and strengthen integration into national and international research networks.

Compulsory modules
Content:
- Students must choose two of the following three courses: Advanced Qualitative Research, Advanced Quantitative Research, Philosophical Research Methods
- Participation in the Spring Academy
- Preparatory modules: Good Scientific Practice, Research Data Management

Elective modules
Content:
- Students must complete a total of 30 ECTS from a range of optional theory and methodology modules (e.g. Marketing Research Methods, Current Issues in Research Methods)
- Up to 10 of the 30 ECTS credits may be earned through participation in conferences (5 ECTS credits per conference attended).
- Up to 10 of the 30 ECTS credits may be earned through participation in colloquia (5 ECTS credits per participation).
