The health literacy of migrants in Hessen (GeKoMi)
A mixed-methods study from the perspective of different stakeholders
Project overview
Study results from Germany and other countries indicate that migrants tend to have, on average, a lower health literacy than the general population. However, little is known about the exact causes, the barriers to accessing health-related information and the strategies and approaches available to improve the health literacy among this population group.
The aim of the GeKoMi project was therefore to use a mixed-methods approach to identify the barriers that migrants face when accessing health-related information, particularly in relation to health promotion and prevention services, and to identify potential ways to strengthen their health literacy. Based on these results, target-group-specific measures and strategies are identified to improve the health literacy of migrants.
