MEISINGER Bone Management Symposium focusses on complications in oral implantology

Many people sit at tables in a room, look ahead and listen.

The MEISINGER Bone Management Symposium took place for the 16th time on 22 November 2025 on the campus of Witten/Herdecke University (UW/H) - under the scientific direction of Prof Dr Jochen Jackowski, Chair of Oral Surgery and Dental Emergency Care at the UW/H, and Prof Dr Dr Frank Hölzle, Director of the Clinic and Polyclinic for Maxillofacial Surgery at the University Hospital of RWTH Aachen. It offered participants the opportunity to discuss complications in oral implantology with colleagues from practices and clinics.

In front of 140 guests, PD Dr Dr Lars Bonitz, Senior Consultant at the Clinic for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery - Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery - at Klinikum Dortmund gGmbH (Clinic Director: Prof Dr Dr Stefan Haßfeld) and academic with postdoctoral lecturing qualification at the School of Dentistry at UW/H, and Prof Jackowski moderated the lectures and led the subsequent discussions.

Complications occur relatively frequently in medicine and dentistry. However, they vary considerably depending onthe type of procedure, the health of the patient and from speciality to speciality. Most complications in oral implantology are treatable and can be limited by careful planning, adequate surgical technique and aftercare. The individual risk assessment by the treating doctors or dentists is crucial. Intraoperative and postoperative bleeding, wound healing disorders, infections (perimucositis and peri-implantitis) and adverse reactions caused by medication (e.g. immunosuppressants) are complications that must be expected in oral implantology.

The speakers at this year's event used their extensive knowledge and expertise to address practical aspects of complications in oral implantology.

Speakers and topics:

  • Bleeding complications, therapy and prophylaxis
    > Dr. med. dent. Philipp Peters
  • Nerve injuries: Diagnostics, therapy and prophylaxis
