Oleg Yushko

Artist in Residence from November 2024 to June 2025

From November 2024 to June 2025, Oleg Yushko, an artist from Belarus who lives in Düsseldorf, was a guest artist. He is interested in digital technologies with which he transfers reproductions of cultural artefacts into unusual situational environments, such as public space.

Oleg Yushko's first event at Witten/Herdecke University was the exhibition of his "X3-Box", which resembles an almost black cube and uses augmented reality to make historical X-ray tubes appear on the viewer's mobile phone. This was preceded by research in the depot of the German Röntgen Museum in Remscheid.

Oleg Yushko completed his residency at Witten/Herdecke University with the "Wittenhorn" group of works, which comprises an acoustic intervention in the urban space and the resulting sculptural, filmic and installation works. His observations on the campus led him to a playground slide, which in his imagination was reminiscent of an oversized resonating body, similar to the alpine musical instrument alphorn.

His ambitious project ultimately consisted of using streaming technology to make the rehearsal of the university orchestra sound synchronised through the giant tube. The neighbouring open-air playground broke with the exclusivity of the concert hall and enriched the music transmission with further moments of perception. Subsequent exhibitions in Düsseldorf and Cologne traced the transgressive experience of the invention intermedially.
