Reflection on medicine during the Holocaust to support personal and professional identity formation in health professions education

Madelin S. Riesen (PhD student), in cooperation with Dr Hedy Wald (Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University; USA)

Project overview

Doctoral project: Doctors and medical/scientific institutions committed serious, ethically indefensible crimes during National Socialism and the Holocaust. Critical reflection on this part of the past can serve as an effective basis for personal and professional identity formation, with an intensive examination of ethical values and norms. The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of an excursion to the Auschwitz memorial site as part of the curriculum "Medical awareness and ethics using the example of medicine under National Socialism" on the personal and professional identity formation of students by means of qualitative analyses of student reflective writings. Initial results were published in 2023.
