ReMinder: A quick break outside the bedroom door

Pause for 21 seconds. Take a deep breath. Approach the situation mindfully.

Here you will find all the key information about our research project on a short, 21-second mindfulness exercise in everyday care practice.

What’s it all about?

A quick break before you go into your rooms

In day-to-day care work, there are situations where it all becomes too much: time pressure, stress and exhaustion can mean we lack the calm needed to treat others with as much patience and attention as we would like to.

This is
exactly where our ReMinder comes in.

A short mindfulness exercise

Before you enter the room of someone in your care, if the situation allows, take a brief moment to yourself. With a simple word of encouragement that we’ll share with you, take two conscious breaths in and out.

Then open the door.

This brief pause is intended to help you step back from the stress of your daily work for a moment and approach the person in your care with renewed awareness and attentiveness.

How ReMinder works

The exercise has been deliberately kept simple and can be easily incorporated into your daily care routine.

You decide for yourself when and how often you would like to use ReMinder – whenever the situation allows.

Take part in our research project!

As part of a collaboration between the nursing service at RWTH Aachen University Hospital and the Institute for Integrative Medicine at the University of Witten/Herdecke, we are investigating how beneficial such a ‘micro-break’ can be in day-to-day nursing practice.

We are particularly interested in two questions:

  • Can ReMinder help carers to interact with patients in a more mindful and attentive way?
  • Can this brief break help staff to cope better with stress in their day-to-day nursing work?

Take part in the project

We would ask you to complete a short online questionnaire using a pseudonym on three separateoccasions and to tell us about your experiences with ReMinder. You can complete the questionnaires at a time that suits you, including, of course, from home.

Participation in the survey is, of course, voluntary. Your details will be treated confidentially and, in accordance with the study’s data protection policy, will only be analysed in pseudonymised form.

By taking part, you will help us to better understand whether and how a brief mindfulness break outside the patient’s room can enrich everyday care.
