Research data management at UW/H to be represented at FDM@Campus 2026

How can research data management (RDM) be taught in such a way that it supports researchers in their day-to-day research work right from the start? This question will be addressed in a lecture by Annette Strauch-Davey, Research Data Management representative at Witten/Herdecke University, at the national conference FDM@Campus 2026, which takes place in Göttingen from 29 September to 1 October. Under the title ‘RDM Awareness in PhD Programmes – Keeping Data Under Control – Right from the Start’, she will present her approach on 30 September 2026 to systematically embed research data management in teaching for researchers and in staff development programmes for staff members.

At Witten/Herdecke University, research data management (FDM) has been gradually integrated into teaching, PhD colloquia and internal training programmes since November 2024.

The focus is on a range of requirements: whilst in medicine and nursing science the handling of sensitive personal data, ethical frameworks and secure data repositories are particularly relevant, in health informatics the focus is, amongst other things, on technical standards, interoperability and data-driven research processes.

This content is delivered through modules embedded in the curriculum, practice-oriented workshops and training programmes tailored to specific staff groups. Topics covered include data organisation, documentation, versioning, the FAIR principles, as well as institutional and legal requirements. The aim is for researchers and staff to acquire the skills needed to handle research data responsibly and sustainably at an early stage, and to embed good scientific practice into their day-to-day research work.

In addition, research data management is also integrated into staff development. Here, staff are systematically trained in the legal, organisational and technical requirements for handling research data.

Participation in ‘’ (FDM@Campus 2026)also highlights the growing integration of Witten/Herdecke University within the German research data management community. The conference brings together universities and research institutions to exchange practical solutions and experiences relating to research data management and to develop these further collaboratively. This year’s event focuses on the question of how researchers can be best supported through tailored FDM services.
