More time for what really matters – teaching with skulio

How can artificial intelligence make everyday school life easier? The start-up skulio is tackling this challenge. The idea originated in the ‘Start-up Creation and Management’ seminar at Witten/Herdecke University. As he continued his management studies, UW/H graduate Elias Perez found the opportunity to further develop his business plan and eventually took the step of founding the company together with his friend Teoman Köse. Both founders observed first-hand how heavily teachers are burdened by administrative tasks and the preparation of teaching materials, and how little individual support can actually be provided in practice. This is where skulio comes in, demonstrating that AI in education is not a replacement, but a tool for teachers to enhance the quality of education and ensure equal opportunities for pupils.

The company offers intelligent tools that simplify lesson preparation and provide individualised support for pupils. The business model is based on a flexible subscription that can be used by individual teachers or by entire schools and organisations. In just a few steps, teachers can generate high-quality worksheets that can be adapted to different learning levels and areas of support. The underlying AI has been optimised from a didactic and pedagogical perspective and is suitable for all types of schools and German federal states. Furthermore, the start-up does not rely on prompts or a chat function, but instead provides a simple step-by-step process. From the outset, the founding team focused on close dialogue with the target group in order to develop a needs-based and practice-oriented product.

The start-up is thus addressing three key challenges facing the education system: a shortage of teachers, increasing diversity within school classes and mounting pressure to perform. With skulio, teachers regain valuable resources which they can invest in personal interaction and the individual support of their pupils.

My advice for future entrepreneurs:

“Let your target audience be part of the development process. You should have a clear understanding of the problems they face, the solution they’re looking for, and what their everyday lives are like. At the same time, though, don’t lose sight of the goal. Especially in the early stages, perfectionism is your greatest enemy. It’s far more important to just get started and learn from real-world experience.”
