Understanding the whole person, combining scientific principles with practical experience, and gaining an understanding of different therapeutic approaches: these core principles characterise the psychology degree programme with a specialisation in clinical psychology at the University of Witten/Herdecke (UW/H). Alongside academic training, the personal development of students also plays an important role. Just how formative this period of study can be was evident at this year’s graduation ceremony for the School of Psychology and Psychotherapy: more than 100 Bachelor’s and Master’s graduates celebrated the successful completion of their studies together with lecturers and their families.
“It is always a wonderful experience to be able to congratulate these people, with whom we have explored and studied psychology, as they complete their university education and set out on their journey into the world of work. We wish all graduates, from the bottom of our hearts, all the very best for this new chapter in their lives,” says Prof. Ulrich Weger, programme director of the Bachelor’s programme in Psychology.
Graduate Fynn Müller also describes just how much one’s time at university can shape one both academically and personally: “It’s lovely to have now completed my Master’s at UW/H following my Bachelor’s – and to realise just how much I have developed during this time, both academically and personally.” He adds that the new Master’s programme has opened up many new prospects for him. Bachelor’s graduate Celina Erdt also wishes to continue her studies in Witten. For her, the university has long since become more than just a place of study. She is particularly looking forward to the therapeutic elements of the programme, which play an important role in the Master’s: “I’m really looking forward to gaining insights into the various therapeutic approaches.”
From Bachelor’s to Master’s: studying psychology in Witten
Since its foundation in 2012, the School of Psychology and Psychotherapy has continued to develop. Having started with 35 students, it now has around 500 students enrolled on its Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes. An important milestone was the professional recognition of the multi-disciplinary Bachelor’s programme in 2020. Since 2023, this has been complemented by the Master’s programme in Psychology – specialising in Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy – which meets the requirements for professional registration.
This coordinated programme of study enables students to continue their academic journey from Bachelor’s to Master’s level in Witten. In doing so, the UW/H combines an academically sound academic education with practice-oriented teaching, including through the university’s own psychotherapy outpatient clinic and collaboration with clinical partners.
Even at the student selection stage, the university attaches great importance to ensuring that applicants not only meet the academic requirements but are also a good personal fit for the programme. “We want to ensure that students not only meet the academic standards of a modern psychology degree programme, but also fit in with the school and its teaching staff through their creativity and enthusiasm for the subject,” explains Prof. Dr Thomas Ostermann, Head of the School of Psychology and Psychotherapy.
Anyone wishing to commence a psychology degree at UW/H can apply for the Bachelor’s degree programme for the 2027 summer semester until 10 December 2026. Further information on the degree programme and the application process is available on this website.
