“Power, for All: How to Influence People by Understanding What They Want – What They Really, Really Want – and How to Use Your Power for Good”

In summer of 2026, the Reinhard Mohn Institute of Management (RMI) will honor Prof. Tiziana Casciaro, an internationally renowned management researcher from the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto, with the RMI Distinguished Lecture. She will showcase her research on power, which was featured in her book “Power, for All” (co-authored with J. Battilana of Harvard) and recently published in German.

No matter your station in life or your ambitions at work, power is always part of the picture—with its opportunities, its dilemmas, and its responsibilities. This talk demystifies what power truly is: not a title or a personality trait, but a dynamic that emerges in every relationship. You’ll learn how power is gained and lost, how to influence even without formal authority, and how to mobilize others by understanding what motivates them at a deeper, more human level. Most importantly, we’ll explore how to use your power to energize rather than control, helping you cultivate the kind of followership that moves organizations forward and creates lasting positive impact in your industry and beyond.

Tiziana Casciaro is a professor of organizational behavior at the Rotman School of Management of the University of Toronto. Her research on interpersonal and organizational networks and power dynamics has received distinguished scientific achievement awards from the Academy of Management and has been covered in the New York Times, Washington Post, CNN, Economist, Financial Times, MSNBC, ABC, the CBC, Fortune, and TIME magazine. She is the co-author of the book Power, for All: How It really Works and Why It’s Everyone’s Business (Simon & Schuster) that received the Academy of Management’s 2022 George R. Terry book award for the most outstanding contribution to the global advancement of management knowledge during the previous two years. Tiziana Casciaro received her B.A. in Business Administration from Bocconi University in Milan, and her M.S. and Ph.D. in Organization Science and Sociology from Carnegie Mellon University. Before joining the University of Toronto, she served on the faculty of the Harvard Business School.

The event is free of charge and will be held in English.
