Griffelkunst celebrates its 100th anniversary

An artist in his studio.

This November, the unique Griffelkunst-Vereinigung e. V. celebrates its 100th anniversary. And Witten is joining in the celebrations! On Friday, 14 November, from 5 to 9 pm, interested parties can visit the WittenLab. Zukunftslabor Studium fundamentale of Witten/Herdecke University (Holzbau, 1st floor, Alfred-Herrhausen-Straße 48, 58455 Witten) to visit the exhibition and experience Griffelkunst live in conversation with members and group leaders - in Witten, Prof Dr Renate Buschmann is in this role.

A selection of prints and photographs will be presented throughout Germany

As a non-profit art association, the Griffelkunst-Vereinigung distributes editions of original prints, photography and all forms of multiple art by renowned and up-and-coming artists twice a year. Members can select four original prints per year for the Kunstverein contribution - the 400th anniversary selection will take place in November 2025. The current selection is presented in schools, cultural institutions and even private homes; in total, works by more than 1,000 artists have already been shown. The Griffelkunst-Vereinigung is thus not only committed to promoting art and culture, but also to preserving and teaching traditional printing techniques.

About the association

In 1925, primary school teacher Johannes Böse (1879-1955) founded the independent association in order to "discover, develop and spread an understanding of and love for the visual arts in our society". With an initial 79 members, he started the association in Hamburg-Langenhorn in the north of the city in order to bring original art into private homes. The graphic art association with the highest circulation in the world has now grown to 4,500 members throughout Germany. No longer limited to Hamburg, the exhibition groups meet twice a year throughout Germany at almost 90 locations from Helgoland to Görlitz to Lindau on Lake Constance, run by volunteer members.
